What is it

In relation to celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Nepal-Japan Friendship, Tokoname Nepal Society, Aichi Prefecture, Japan has proposed ARAMBHA, Contemporary Nepali Sculptors’ Group to organize a sculpture symposium in Nepal under the theme 'HARMONY'.

'HARMONY' - Sculpture Symposium: 2006 is a mega event that will take place in an open environment. The event will bring together sculptors from Nepal and Japan, who will demonstrate the process of creating sculptures in stone in front of the public. In addition, they will explain their approaches and exchange ideas with the spectators. The artists will use Godawari marble as their medium. It is expected that about twenty-one pieces of sculptures will be created by twenty-one contemporary sculptors from Nepal and Japan during the event.

The symposium will prove to be a landmark in the development of Nepali art field. This will be the first workshop of its kind in Nepal. People from every walk of life will be invited to observe the workshop. Besides, this event will help our local artists to emerge in the global art scene.

The prime objective of the symposium is to initiate artistic and cultural cooperation between the artists from Nepal and Japan. A group of creative and enthusiastic artists from the both countries will participate in the event. It will provide an opportunity for the artists of the younger generation, art lovers, connoisseurs and contemporary thinkers to watch the process of sculpting.

How the Symposium will prove to be fruitful

  • A spectacular live creation of monumental sculptures will be observed by the students, artists, public and media. This event will promote art awareness and encourage the local artists. This will consequently create a bridge between art and various sectors of society and hopefully generate interest in the international art market.

  • Professional artists from Nepal and Japan will work together sharing their concepts, approaches and equipment with each other.

  • Cultural, aesthetic, philosophical ideas and practices will be exchanged among the participating sculptors and audience.

  • The event will be instrumental in publicizing Nepal and will be helpful in promoting tourism
    - Public awareness on geological elements of Nepal and the use of stone in contemporary art will be expanded. Besides, stone resources of Godawari and its impact on the state's economy will also be highlighted.

  • Public awareness on creativity and discipline involved while carving a piece of art in stone will be extended.

  • The symposium will be instrumental towards establishing an open air museum of sculptures in Nepal, which will include works by international artists.

  • This collection could be developed as a monument park commemorating the 50th Anniversary of Nepal-Japan Friendship.

  • All the twenty-one pieces of marble sculptures will be installed permanently in different public areas, streets and open spaces in the Kathmandu valley which will help to enhance the beauty of the city.

  • Relationship between Nepal and Japan will be more strengthened.
