Lain Singh
Bangdel saw the
world through
his creative
eyes for the
first time on
21st Dec. 1924.
He chose colours
and brushes as
playing mates as
a young boy and
the passion of
friendship with
this vividness
grew even
intimate every
moment as he
stepped into a
new span of
time. He
realized his
initial creative
paces in a
natural
wonderland
Darjeeling. Soon
in the age of 16
he got a
scholarship to
peruse arts in
the Government
College of Arts
and Crafts in
Calcutta from
where he
completed a
diploma course.
A Self made man
with an
ingenious hard
work and
dedication; he
worked for few
advertising
agencies and
indulged himself
in some
commercial art
works. During
his stay in
Calcutta he met
a legendry
filmmaker
Satyajeet Ray.
The
unforeseeable
corridors of
life took him to
London where he
acquired
knowledge on
painting,
literature and
music. After
wards he found
himself in Paris
and Enrolled in
Ecde des Beaux.
During his
student life he
traveled to some
great art Museum
such as Prado
art museum
Altamira cave
and Louvre
museum. After
the completion
of the art
course he
struggled as an
artist in Paris.
In those days he
met Manu, a
Nepalese
companion who
later became his
wife. During his
stay in Europe
he met two of
the most
intriguing and
passionate
painters in art
history, the
pioneers of
cubism. Pablo
Picasso and
Geoges Braque.
He was called by
the late king
Mahendra to
Nepal & was
appointed a
member of Royal
Nepal Academy of
where he became
a vice
chancellor &
later on became
the chancellor &
served the
government to
restore art in
the nation.
He was a
versatile artist
to whom
expression was
the source of
every art form.
He chose
different mode
of arts to
express the
experiences of
his sentiments,
through painting
& literature. He
painted to
comprehend the
invisible
realities
through
abstraction & to
sense the
visible
realities
through the
figurative. And
he wrote to
realize the
inner realism
through the
outer
experiences of
other beings &
objects. He
portrayed
existence
through
landscapes,
mother & child &
at times through
portraits. Muluk
Bahir (away from
the country),
Maitighar
(Maternal home),
Langado ko
Saathi (A lame's
friend),
Rambrant,
Prachin Nepali
chitrakala
(Ancient
Nepalese Art),
Early sculptures
of Nepal, stolen
images of Nepal,
twenty five
years of
Nepalese art are
his few
memorable books.
He was decorated
with many
prestigious
needs & awards
for his
unmatchable
contribution to
the art field.
On the 15 of
October, 2002
his visions
merged with the
physical reality
of existence &
departed from
the world but
his spiritual
state of mind
will always be
with us...
forever.
He was a flower
who grew from a
seed of
creativity &
tried to rise as
high as the
skies & inhale &
accumulate
natural
knowledge. To
what extent he
was able to do
that is the
question only he
can answer
through his arts
but he
definitely tough
the order
flowers to bloom
in this creative
process. There
has been many
artists in the
past & surely
many are yet to
come but there
was only one
flower named
Lain Singh
Bangdel in the
Garden of
creativity whose
fragrance will
enlighten the
generations to
come.
Back in
Darjeeling in my
adolescent used
to stare at the
panoramic view
of kanchanjunga
in the sunset &
sunrise, perhaps
that activated
my initial
creative whim...
those days will
always be in my
memory...
forever'- Lain
Singh Bangdel.
