Tej Bahadur Chitrakar

Tej Bdr. Chtrakar was born on the year 1956B.S. Painting was his parental profession. So the artistic environment affected his sentiments since his childhood, as a result he started sketching from the age of 10. He gained proficiency in painting traditional art when he was merely 16 years of age. He got the initial knowledge in art from his uncles as they were also artists, so his house itself was his art institution.

He concluded to paint traditional art until he was 21 & afterwards his style gradually altered. Requesting the PM Chandra Samaser Rana, he got scholarship to pursue his art education in Calcutta. In the year 1979B.S. he enrolled himself in the Government Art School & College in Calcutta from where he completed his diploma course in fine art in First division. The PM Chandra S. Rana urged him to focus in human figures, so he specialized on this category. But after his return he was unable to get a desirable job as the PM Chandra S. Rana expired. Only after the reign of Juddha S. Rana as the PM, the artist got opportunity to paint hunting series paintings. Thus he created a series painting in hunting theme amongst which a (10x12) ft painting of tigers & elephants fighting is considered to be one of the most amazing of his artworks. This painting can be seen on the wall of Singha Durbar hall. In the year 2013B.S. he was commissioned by the Nepal Art Society to paint figures of the Kings of the Shah Regime. He was also commissioned to paint figures of Rana families. He portrayed various paintings in oil & water color of still lives, landscapes, portraitures & paintings depicting daily lives.

His mode of painting was very much influenced by the western realistic style. In 1997B.S. he pursued his career as an art teacher in Durbar School. Later around 2004 B.S. he was transferred to the Juddha Kala School. In the year 2010 B.S. the then principal Keshav Duwadi resigned from the post & Tej Bdr. Chitrakar was selected as the in-charge of the Juddha Kala School & in the year 2019 B.S. he got retired. In 2021 B.S. an art division was instituted in the Royal Nepal Academy, where he served as an art instructor for three consecutive years. After Nepal Association of Fine Arts (NAFA) came into existence, the office was shifted to Naxal. He was granted a monthly fellowship of Rs. 450 from NAFA. He also tutored many students at home making a long list of his followers. The legendary artist passed away in 5th Kartik 2028 B.S. at the age of 71.
