Ashmina Ranjit

- Ashmina Ranjit

Keeping in mind even the tinist requirment of life, violence it seems would never vanish from the world. Because deep down in the basement of our existence what we are is merely, an animal, & Drawin puts it quite proficiently- survival of the fittest." Though what distinguishes us from rest of the other animals is that we have a thinking device called the mind which has capability to keep a balance between peace & violence as a result establishing harmony. But not much of that is happening in the world today. Collisions of Ideas and philosophical war is tearing the world apart & this tantrum of violence has taken over the tranquility of Nepal as well. Asmina Ranjit brought out her expression of such ideas in her installation work in the ambience of Kala-Upaban at the premise of NAFA. Recognized for her bold conceptual non-conventional presentation, she literally made the spectators to walk through the jungle where the aftermath of violence persisted. An atmosphere re-created to realize actually what the victims of violence are going through.

A genre which picked its momentum in the 1970's but the basic concept was developed by innovative artists like Picasso,Brancusi,Marcel Duchamp,Pet Mondrian by experimenting on technical & aesthetical methods & later it got a name -non-conventional art. It was deliberately followed by innovators such as -Sollewitt,Jan Dibbits, Victor Burgin to name a few. This form of art is brought into existance usally through ready made objects. Ashmina brought together various components such as taperecorders, glasses, colors etc & set them in the garden of NAFA to create a painful magnitude.

Installation might be taken as a new method of creatiivity in Nepal. But perhaps not so because ritual practice which is quite close to installation art, was and still is carried on various festivals and 'Jatras'. The only difference is that the traditional practices make religious/spiritual statement & contemporary Installation makes political / social / personal statement. And Ashmina is concerned about her nation and expresses her sentiments through her art presentation, which was carried out in the 20 Nov2003.
